DISTRONIC PLUS incl. BAS PLUS and PRE-SAFE® brake[4]
At the push of a button, the DISTRONIC PLUS proximity-controlled cruise control helps the driver keep the vehicle at the desired (timed) distance from the vehicle in front when travelling at speeds of 0 to 200 km/h. Radar sensors permanently measure the distance, regulate the speed and engage the brakes as necessary.
The BAS PLUS Brake Assist in conjunction with the PRE-SAFE® brake system now helps to avoid rear-end collisions more effectively. If radar sensors identify a potential collision and the driver applies the brake, BAS PLUS is primed to apply braking in accordance with the available stopping distance.
If a potential collision is detected at a vehicle speed of 30 to 200 km/h and the driver fails to apply the brakes in a timely manner, DISTRONIC PLUS emits visual and audible signals.
If the driver does not respond to this warning, the PRE-SAFE® brake system initiates independent partial braking 1.6 seconds before a calculated impact at a deceleration rate of up to 4m/s2 and activates comprehensive PRE-SAFE® measures. If the system assesses the situation as highly critical, an independent full brake application are initiated 0.6 seconds before the calculated impact. This reduces the impact speed and the resulting severity of the accident.

When parking or looking for a parking space, the driver can call on the assistance of the PARKTRONIC system. Ultrasonic sensors automatically measure the length of parking spaces parallel to the car when moving at a vehicle speed of 30 km/h or less. With its integral camera the system recognises posted speed limits and shows the registered speed limit on the central display. Telephony, entertainment and navigation
The Audio 50 APS map-based navigation system is equipped with a CD/DVD player and telephone keypad. It can be operated via the multifunction steering wheel and the controller. Navigation is based on a 2D map representation on a 5.8 inch colour display. The automatic traffic jam tracker can help you to avoid traffic hazards and congested routes. The COMAND APS multimedia system is the central control unit for all telematics components. It features a rapid hard-disk navigation system with map representation (Birdview, 3D places of interest), an automatic traffic jam tracker (TMC Pro) and a 7 inch colour display.
The system’s entertainment functions include a radio, an MP3-compatible CD/DVD player ((integral 6-disc DVD changer available as an option), an equalizer with speed-sensitive volume control, and the MUSIC REGISTER with 6 GB hard disk for storing digital music files. An Aux-In connection in the glove compartment, a slot for SD memory cards, and a Bluetooth® interface provide connections to external data devices and a mobile telephone. The Gracenote® database supplies information on album and artist for CDs and DVDs. THERMOTRONIC creates an optimum interior climate using separate temperature controls for different parts of the vehicle. The driver, front passenger and rear passengers can travel in complete comfort at the temperatures of their choice. The 3-zone system is activated at the touch of a button and operates fully automatically. In addition to individual temperatures, the climate styles DIFFUSE, MEDIUM and FOCUS are available. The climatised seats improve ride comfort and reduce transpiration thanks to a pleasant air flow and selectable seat heating. Fans integrated in the seat upholstery uniformly distribute a flow of air in three intensity levels under the leather backrest and cushion covers. The anti-theft alarm system (ATA) provides warnings of possible theft and break-in. It automatically activates when the vehicle is locked using the remote. The system triggers an alarm when it recognises that an unauthorised person is opening the vehicle doors, boot lid or the bonnet. The alarm also sounds if the ignition lock is shorted or removed or the foot brake applied. The dynamic handling package with sports driving mode boosts the vitality of your vehicle. At the push of a button you can select between a standard comfortable or thrillingly sporty driving style. Independent of the selected driving mode, the Adaptive Damping System aligns itself with road conditions and the current driving scenario. The light package comprises bi-xenon headlamps, featuring variable light distribution for optimum use on secondary roads, motorways and in heavy fog, as well as automatic headlamp range adjustment. With the functions provided by the Adaptive Highbeam Assist, headlamps are dipped automatically when illuminated road users are detected and the light range of the dipped headlamps is aligned with the distance of illuminated oncoming vehicles or vehicles ahead. The Adaptive Highbeam Assist also increases the range of the dipped headlamps by up to 300 m to ensure that the layout of the road, pedestrians or critical situations can be detected at an earlier stage and more effectively. On free stretches of road the headlamps are set to full beam again and the widest possible light range used. It is no longer necessary to switch manually back and forth between high and low beam settings.
The active light function and the cornering light feature in the fog lamps are further components of the package. Making yourself seen is an essential part of driving safety. The daytime driving lights and LED turn indicator lamps are effective in attracting the attention of other road users, and the integrated headlamp cleaning system minimises dirt build-up on the vehicle's lighting system.

The memory package makes frequent switches between drivers much more convenient. It stores individual settings for the driver’s seat and front-passenger seat for up to three people. The driver simply chooses a setting at the push of a button and the seats (including both electrically adjustable four-way lumbar supports), steering column and exterior mirrors are automatically restored to the previously saved positions. The PRE-SAFE® positioning function can also move the front-passenger seat into a more favourable crash position in critical situations. | |
The exterior mirrors can be completely folded in and moved back to their original position from within easy reach of the driver. Whether you’re driving through narrow entry ways and exits, parking the car or going through automatic car washes this preventive protection of the mirror casing helps avoid damage. Automatic dimming of the interior mirror and the exterior mirrors on the driver’s side help to enhance safety and comfort as it eliminates the need for manual adjustments. | |
