BlueEFFICIENCY measures

BlueEFFICIENCY measures are comprehensive vehicle optimisations that help to save fuel and ease the burden on the environment. The new E-Class Saloon combines the most efficient engines with well-designed aerodynamic and energy management measures to keep fuel consumption to a minimum.

ECO display[1] In order for the driver to be able to check the efficiency of his driving style and, if necessary, make adjustments, ECO display shows an evaluation of driving style in the instrument cluster speedometer field.
ECO start/stop function The ECO start/stop function reduces fuel consumption and emissions by switching off the engine automatically when the car comes to a stop (e.g. in traffic jams or at traffic lights).
Intelligent energy management Significant savings can also come from a series of small contributions. With the aim of reducing the consumption of the E-Class Saloon, the Mercedes-Benz engineers examined all the main components with regard to their energy requirements and found ways of getting them to work even more economically. Overview of efficient energy management measures: On-demand control: The new electromechanical direct steer system offers a considerable potential for fuel savings, as the energy requirements are system-controlled. Efficient alternator management: When braking and in overrun mode, kinetic energy is used to recharge the battery. More efficient fuel management: the pumping pressure of the fuel pump is based on the precise amount of fuel needed at the time. Air conditioning as required: If cooling is not needed, the compressor is automatically decoupled from the engine's belt drive.

Efficiency technologies in the E-Class

The latest-generation CDI diesel engines combine irresistible performance characteristics with low consumption. Injection pressure has been increased, smoothness of operation enhanced and noise levels optimised – while reduced compression makes for lower emission levels.

Direct injection, increased compression and turbocharging (turbocharging in some of the 6-cylinder petrol engines and the V8 engines) deliver outstanding torque, output and noise reduction figures for the petrol engines. Thanks to innovative engine technology it has been possible to significantly reduce emissions and fuel consumption compared with previous models.

The E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID is a milestone in terms of economy, sustainability and comfort. It combines a 4-cylinder diesel engine with an electric motor thus making the E-Class Saloon one of the most efficient models in its vehicle class.

The C 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Edition special model reduces CO2 emissions to less than 119 grams per kilometre on average.

BlueDIRECT engine technology The current BlueDIRECT V6 and V8 engine generation includes measures such as downsizing, direct petrol injection and turbocharging (8-cylinder models) for fast response. Using the innovative BlueDIRECT engine technology, it was possible to reduce emissions and fuel consumption by up to 24% compared with predecessor engine models.
BlueTEC catalytic converter technology BlueTEC catalytic converter technology uses the reactant AdBlue® to purify exhaust gases. This makes it possible to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 90 percentThis diesel technology, currently the cleanest in the world, already today complies with the requirements of the future Euro 6 emissions standard.

Environmental certificate

Mercedes-Benz is the only automotive brand in the world to have received an ISO-standard Environmental Certificate. For this certification, the vehicle models have to meet strict requirements and undergo stringent controls in their development, production and recycling. Our goal is to make environmental protection objectively measurable and to make it possible for you as the driver to experience it concretely.
