Damping system with steel suspension and SDC (Sensitive Damping Control) shock absorbers adjusts the damping superbly to the road surface, especially on uneven surfaces; the suspension comes across as more dynamic and comfortable, reducing vibrations and noise.

The standard-specification electromechanic direct steering replaces the well-known hydraulic steering assist and allows for the use of innovative assistance systems such as Active Parking Assist or Active Lane Keeping Assist. In addition it provides improved handling and enhanced agility thanks to more direct steering response at all speeds and more efficient driving as energy is required only for the steering process.

The ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM, also called roll stabilisation, reduces the vehicle’s roll angle when cornering or driving off road by using its active suspension stabilisers. This enhances ride comfort for the vehicle occupants and boosts driving dynamics off the road, at medium speed (winding rural roads) and also at high speed (motorway).

AIRMATIC provides ride comfort and driving dynamics at the highest level. The air suspension system works in combination with a fully automatic damping adjustment which can continually adapt to the driving situation and provides excellent road roar and tyre vibration characteristics even when the road is only slightly bumpy.

In addition the vehicle can be raised on poor or unfavourable stretches of road to increase ground clearance. When driving continually at a high speed the vehicle is automatically lowered. This improves handling and reduces wind resistance – an additional contribution to reducing fuel consumption.

The ON&OFFROAD package gives the driver greater control over the vehicle’s handling – both on the road and for off-road driving.

Using the transmission mode switch the driver can choose different pre-set transmission modes for various road characteristics. Depending on the transmission mode the characteristics of ESP®, 4ETS, transmission, suspension, engine, steering and also ASR are adapted. 100% differential locks on the centre differential provide traction and performance when they are needed.

On the COMAND display the effects of the transmission modes and the gradient and incline angle are clearly displayed. A robust underguard beneath the engine and reinforced underbody panelling can help reduce damage to the vehicle during tough off-road use.
