The ADAPTIVE BRAKE system improves ride comfort and safety. On the one hand it helps to perform critical braking manoeuvres with the basic function of the ABS anti-lock braking system while on the other hand, convenience functions make coping with daily driving situations easier.

Hill Start Assist prevents unintentional rolling back of the vehicle on slopes when the driver moves his foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal. The "pre-fill" function ensures that the brake pads are already put in contact with the brake discs as soon as the driver releases the accelerator pedal. The resulting time saving can shorten the stopping distance.

In the wet the "brake drying" function automatically removes the film of water from the brake discs to shorten the brake response time. The HOLD function lets you keep the vehicle stationary without having to keep your foot on the brake pedal.

In particular on long trips and when driving at night ATTENTION ASSIST can increase driving safety. Based on the driver's steering behaviour the system recognises typical signs of fatigue and severe inattentiveness and issues visual and audible warnings of impending microsleep.

A five-level bar graph in the instrument cluster multifunction display represents the current attention level of the driver. The time elapsed since the last break is also shown.

If the driver's attention level declines too far, a coffee cup icon is displayed to inform that a break is advisable; an audible warning sounds as well. At the same time COMAND Online offers to search for a Services Area. If the setting "Sensitive" is selected, the system warns the driver even earlier.

ATTENTION ASSIST works at speeds between 60 and 200 km/h: it can be set to display a warning in the instrument cluster at a determined (in) attention level and can be switched off entirely.

This system can identify critical handling situations in advance and initiate preventive measures for occupant protection in the event of an impending accident. These include e.g. the reversible belt tensioning or the automatic closing of any open windows.

In strong gusts of crosswind the system can help the driver to stay on course. Targeted brake interventions significantly reduce the vehicle's lateral drift. This enhances the driver's sense of security and helps prevent undue reactions.

Parking and exiting a space made easy: Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC makes finding a parking space as well as parking in both parallel and transversal spaces easier; it also assists when leaving a parallel parking space. It automatically steers the vehicle into parking spaces and frees the driver from having to steer and brake.

If the vehicle travels slower than 30 km/h, the system indicates with a "P" symbol and a directional arrow in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster that it has located a suitable parking space. By default the system looks on the right side of the road, when the left-side turn indicator is activated also on the left side of the road.

If the driver changes into reverse gear, confirms the parking selection shown and drives no faster than 10 km/h, the active Parking Assist system carries out the steering manoeuvre on its own. The driver only needs to operate the accelerator and brake pedal; parking is complete in a maximum of seven moves.

The electronic parking aid PARKTRONIC monitors the front and rear of the vehicle during manoeuvring and warns the driver when it detects a potential collision. It is active at a speed of up to 18 km/h.

Reverse parking and manoeuvring is considerably easier and safer using the rear-view camera. Protected by a flap, it automatically extends when reverse gear is engaged and shows the driver the surroundings behind the vehicle with dynamic guidelines on the media display.

When reversing out of a parking space, for instance from a driveway, switching to wide-angle mode allows a viewing angle of 180 degrees to help detect approaching vehicles or pedestrians sooner. In combination with a trailer coupling, the system provides an additional function that simplifies lining up to and coupling a trailer using special guide lines and a zoom mode.

See farther .... all the time: This system makes it possible to drive with high beam constantly switched on without dazzling other motorists. The driver thus always has the optimum headlamp range at his disposal.

Using a stereo camera system positioned behind the front windscreen, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus identifies other illuminated road users, such as oncoming vehicles or vehicles ahead, and adjusts the headlamps automatically in line with the new traffic situation. A mechanism in the headlamp module dims the relevant part of the cone of light from the LED headlamps to ensure that the other driver is not dazzled.

This allows the driver to leave the headlamps permanently on high beam, and take full advantage of their range, without any fear of inconvenience or danger to other road users. The function is active at speeds above 30 km/h when travelling on roads without street lighting in the dark.

For the best possible visibility on secondary roads and motorways, when turning or cornering, the LED Intelligent Light System adapts to light and driving conditions. All the headlamp functions are carried out with consumption-optimised LED technology.

The country mode light setting gives brighter and more extensive illumination of the vehicle roadside than conventional low-beam headlamps. Motorway mode is activated once the vehicle speed exceeds 90 km/h. In a first step, the light power is boosted, which provides better illumination of the road and verges. From 110 km/h upwards, the light range is extended.

The cornering light function gives better illumination of the road surface through additional light on the inside of the corner. With the active light function the headlamps swivel into the bend – the driver can see significantly further. With the enhanced fog light function the outer half of the carriageway is illuminated more intensely – yet the driver is less dazzled by fog backglow.
